Bulls Say
The potential spinoff of its marketing division should provide a one-time gain to Sinopec and help strengthen its financial position.
Improving cost efficiency and a move up the value chain in its petrochemical products is helping the company grow investment returns and avoid previous losses.
Higher crude oil prices will help Sinopec to achieve better upstream earnings.
Bears Say
As a state-owned company, Sinopec could place national interests, such as maintaining full employment, above those of investors, constraining cost cuts more than expected.
Without an acquisition of a certain size and quality, Sinopec will probably see continued low returns on its upstream activities.
Potential government interventions on prices of refined oil products due to high oil prices could hinder Sinopec’s ability to pass on cost increases during higher-inflation periods.
